United's title hopes all but bit the dust this afternoon as Wrexham came from one goal down to defeat Preston 2-1 on the road, that meaning that Carlisle now have to win their last two matches, at Shrewsbury and at home to Preston, while needing the Welshmen to drop points in their final game, that coming on their own soil against rock-bottom Accrington Stanley in a fortnight.
The young Blues did their bit this weekend though when they defeated Stockport 3-1 at Creighton, the goals coming from James Reid, Conor Tinnion and an errant County defender. Burnley now have the best chance to catch Wrexham as they sit nine points behind with a massive five games in hand that will no doubt test tired legs at this time of the season, the Clarets winning again, this time 3-0 at home to a free-falling Port Vale outfit.
Preston remain in fourth and they did manage to defeat Wigan 1-0 at home on Saturday before losing against Wrexham today. Into the mid-table reaches and Macclesfield went down 3-1 away to lowly Blackpool, whole Oldham won by the same scoreline, the Latics beating last season's title-winners Walsall 3-1 at home.
Tranmere continue to be hit and miss and this week they missed as they lost 2-1 at second-bottom Morecambe, that win for the Shrimps meaning that Accrington's rare victory, 3-1 at home to Chester, was in vain and Stanley are now guaranteed to finish bottom this season.
Finally in a bottom six table clash of the Burys, Shrewsbury defeated Bury 2-0 on the road to round off the results over the weekend. Next Saturday was supposed to be a blank one with it being the Easter weekend but some clubs have no choice but to make use of a free day to get their remaining fixtures in, and five games therefore take place.
