Youth Team League Weekend Update

Joint-leaders Preston and Walsall keep moving clear at the top of the table as they both won well at home on Saturday, North End defeating Port Vale 5-2 while the Saddlers got the upper hand on Macclesfield 4-2. There is then a log jam of teams from third to ninth divided by only two points, Wigan at the head of the pack despite their match at troubled Stockport being postponed.

Shrewsbury in fourth are having a good run of late and they continued that with a thumping 6-2 win at Chester, while seventh placed Rochdale could only draw 2-2 at current wooden spoon holders Accrington Stanley. Into mid-table and last season's title winners Wrexham were victorious 4-0 at Tranmere, Oldham won 2-1 at home to Morecambe and Blackpool picked up a point on the seaside in a 1-1 draw against Bury.

Up in Cumbria, we lost 2-0 at home to a Burnley side who have now won eight matches in a row, United dropping down to seventh in the table on the back of that defeat. With the Christmas break now on Carlisle's next game comes on the 9th of January away to Rochdale, although one Blue keeping off the festive pudding will be first-year winger Ben McKenna who is away with the Northern Ireland u-17 squad for a two-day training camp at the end of December.

Christmas hasn't started for some yet though and next week one match is played in the division as Macclesfield and Rochdale look to get rid of a game in hand from earlier in the season. While in the Youth Alliance Cup home ties for Accrington Stanley and Bury take place after being waterlogged off on their original round date of the 7th of November.
