Up at the top of the table Preston went down to a rare defeat as they lost 3-1 at home to last season's title-winners Wrexham. Shrewsbury though were unable to take much of an advantage as they could only draw 1-1 at Burnley, but Rochdale, who had no game on Saturday as they were meant to be playing the now defunct Chester City, did make up the gap a little with a 2-0 win over Carlisle on Wednesday afternoon.
Stockport and Walsall were other top five clubs though on the end of defeats at the weekend, as County went down 2-1 at Bury while the Saddlers surpisingly lost 3-1 away to lowly Morecambe. Also down at the bottom Accrington lost 1-0 at home to Macclesfield, while Blackpool gained an unusual three points with a 3-1 home win over Port Vale.
The two last games coming in the mid-table reaches as Oldham drew 0-0 at home to Wigan and Carlisle defeated Tranmere 2-1 at Creighton Rugby Club. A Will Vaulks own goal and a Steven Swinglehurst header featuring on the United side of the scoresheet for the young Blues who next Saturday lunchtime face a tough trip to fourth-placed Walsall.
Away from the division, Preston defeated Doncaster 1-0 at home in the League Cup Northern Quarter-Final last Tuesday before today losing heavily in the semi-final 4-1 on their own turf against Stockport. County now facing Macclesfield in the area final while down south it is Queens Park Rangers versus either Gillingham or Peterborough United in their final.
