It's a tight old chase for the title in the division this year and the week couldn't have gone much better for an out of action second-placed Rochdale side as their rivals only won one game in three. Leaders Port Vale first getting three points on Wednesday though as they thumped Walsall 4-0 at home, before then going down 3-0 on the road at an improving Preston side on Saturday. After conceding four during the week Walsall did bounce back to score the same amount of goals on Saturday however as they picked an excellent 4-1 win at third-placed Burnley.
Elsewhere in the division it was a tale of away wins once more as, to complete the top six in the table, Wigan tasted victory 2-1 at Bury, while further down the table Stockport won 2-0 at Accrington Stanley and Tranmere picked up three points with a 4-1 success at free-falling Blackpool. The Seasiders, who actually stood on top of the division following the Christmas break, now having drawn one and lost eight of their last nine league matches. Finally, the only game to finish as a draw this week came at Oldham as the home side shared the points in a 3-3 scoreline against Macclesfield.
As for Carlisle, well sadly it was a fifth defeat in a row for the young Blues that now leaves them second bottom in the table and just one point ahead of Accrington Stanley with five games left. United on Friday lunchtime losing 2-1 at home to Wrexham with the Cumbrians goal scored late on by Dave Symington with the score at 2-0 to the Red Dragons. Next up it's another Friday afternoon fixture instead of a Saturday morning one for the lads with the Wembley wekeend in mind, United facing Wigan on the road in a 2pm kick-off.
