It could hardly be much tighter at the top of the table now with six sides separated by only three points, with Walsall clinging on at the head of the division despite not playing at the weekend, the Saddlers though heavily in the box seat having won all of their seven games so far and also possessing three matches in hand already on all of their other title rivals.
Carlisle are now in second spot on goal difference after sneaking an injury-time winner to defeat Morecambe 2-1 at home, the United goals scored by Alex Salmon and then Jack Lynch at the last. Third, and also on 21 points are Burnley who thrashed Blackpool 5-0 away from home, while in fourth a point behind are Preston who could only draw 0-0 at home to Oldham. Next up in fifth are Bury with 19 points who hammered local rivals Rochdale 5-0 on the road, while Tranmere, a point adrift of the Shakers, make up the top six after winning 2-1 at Stockport.
Further down the table away from the title race, Shrewsbury moved up a couple of places with a 2-1 victory away to Wigan, while finally Macclesfield drew 1-1 at home to Port Vale. This coming weekend then sees a full list of eight fixtures in the division, with Rochdale the inactive side this time round, Carlisle meanwhile taking on an Accrington team in an 11am home kick-off at Creighton Rugby Club against a Stanley side who they defeated 3-2 away, thanks to an injury-time penalty, a month ago.
