Thirlwell downs Us
Paul Thirlwell's first goal of the season was enough to see off Colchester 1-0 at a windswept Brunton Park.
Both sides struggled to master the wind and rain in the first half but Carlisle faired better than their opponents.
Rory Loy was desperately unlucky not to get on the score sheet with a first-time shot that ex-Carlisle keeper Ben Williams did well to deal with, and then with a header from close range which was deflected for a corner
Carlisle took the lead midway through the opening period with a good move which started in midfield with Jon Paul McGovern.
Lee Miller carried it on before slipping the ball inside to the supporting Thirlwell who slotted a low shot past Williams and inside the right-hand post.
Colchester had a much greater share of the game after the interval and Ian Henderson could easily have brought them level in the 54th minute but his effort from 10 yards was blocked for a corner.
