Carlisle And Morecambe To Do It All Again

After two wins in a row United missed the chance to make it a hat-trick when Morecambe scored twice in the last 20 minutes of this first round tie. Ian Harte midway through the first-half and Vincent Pericard putting Carlisle 2-0 up after 55 minutes before the Shrimps forced a replay late on thanks to goals from Phil Jevons and Mark Duffy.

The home side could have opened the scoring as early as the first minute when Pericard hit in a drive from the edge of the box that was saved by Barry Roche. Pericard missing an even easier chance ten minutes later though, the Blues striker shooting horrendously weakly straight at Roche when one-on-one with the Morecambe stopper 15 yards out, Hurst then seeing his follow up effort well blocked by a busy Roche.

Stewart Drummond then heading over the top at the other end when Jim Bentley had nodded a Shrimps corner across goal. It was Carlisle who took the lead in the 21st minute though when Graham Kavanagh knocked a free-kick into the Morecambe box which Ian Harte headed past Roche from close range.

The visitors looked to get back into it though and Jevons had a shot well saved by Lenny Pidgeley before Harte made a good block on a Neil Wainwright effort. Pidgeley was called into action after 35 minutes though when he held Paul Mullin's 18-yard half-volley. Mullin and Drummond then both firing wide of the target from distance as Morecambe ended the half well.

Like the opening period though, Carlisle started well first up and had some good pressure before eventually doubling their lead on 55 minutes. Pericard this time finding the back of the Shrimps net when he scored with an eight-yard glancing header from Harte's inswinging left-footed free-kick, United looking at their most dangerous throughout from set-pieces.

Kevan Hurst then shortly afterwards wasting a good chance to make it 3-0 to the Cumbrians when he sliced a volley wide when well placed in front of goal. Mullin then showing a poor finish up at the other end when one-on-one with Pidgeley 12 yards out he could only side-foot his effort straight at the body of the Carlisle goalkeeper.

Morecambe did make it 2-1 on 70 minutes however when Jevons produced an excellent goal when, following a corner, a loose ball dropped to him on the edge of the United box, the Shrimps striker hammering a shot home into the top corner off the underside of the crossbar. Drummond didn't help his side's comeback efforts in the 79th minute though when he was sent off for kicking out at Carlisle man Adam Clayton after the two had become involved in a tussle.

Despite being down to ten men though Morecambe kept going and they grabbed an equaliser five minutes from time when Mark Duffy's long range shot surprised Pidgeley and skidded across into the far corner of the United net. Cumbrians substitute Joe Anyinsah then being brilliantly denied at close range by Roche at the near-post as Carlisle's last chance to retake the lead and avoid a replay came and went.
