A foggy evening greeted the players as they took to the Brunton Park pitch for a 5.15pm kick-off of a match that was being broadcast live on the FA website. Very early on there was little action as Vincent Pericard had a shot saved by Fraser Forster on six minutes before moments later shouts for a Carlisle penalty were turned down by referee Nigel Miller after Joe Anyinsah took a tumble in the City box.
United took the lead on 12 minutes though when an Anyinsah cross in from the right produced a remarkable finish from Pericard as his backheel, with the ball a yard behind him, flew over his head at pace and into the roof of the net from 12 yards out. Pericard then having a shot well blocked by Gary Doherty four minutes later.
Norwich equalised with their first real chance of the game however in the 26th minute. The dangerous Wes Hoolahan making a mazy run into the left-hand side of the United box before chipping a ball back from the by-line for Grant Holt to head home from close range. Holt though failing to find the target with a header from an Adam Drury cross seven minutes later.
Graham Kavanagh then producing nothing but an airshot from an Ian Harte pass for the home side as both sides started to battle it out for possession in midfield. Norwich having the upper hand before the interval without ever really looking like they would take the lead in a tight tie.
Things changed about 15 seconds into the second-half however when Carlisle went 2-1 up. Pericard, on the right wing, seemingly controlling a ball up with his arm, before pushing possession across for Hurst 18 yards out. The United midfielder producing a neat finish from there as he swept the ball home right-footed into the far corner of the net.
United were on the up now and just after the hour-mark Pericard blazed wide following good approach work from midfielders Hurst and Peter Murphy. Chris Martin then coming back for Norwich in the 65th minute only to see his shot deflected wide off the legs of Evan Horwood, Simon Lappin then curling an effort inches over the top as the visitors had a good spell in the match.
Carlisle were back up the other end before long though and Anyinsah had a shot deflected wide before Richard Keogh made it 3-1 after 72 minutes. The right-back heading powerfully home at the back-post following a Kavanagh chipped ball in after City had failed to clear their lines properly from a United corner.
Harte then missed a great chance to make it 4-1 six minutes later when he headed a Kavanagh cross over the top from close range. Adam Collin then denying City the chance to make it a tight ending when he made a smart diving save from Hoolahan's long-range shot two minutes into injury time. That the only real stop Collin had to make as Carlisle progressed into round three with ease.
