Substitute Danny Graham netted his first goal in 20 games to end Walsall's 17-match unbeaten run and send Carlisle United third. But it was Saddlers keeper Clayton Ince that Graham will be thanking after his howler allowed the striker's tame header to squeeze under his body. Graham's winner equalled Carlisle's club record of nine successive home victories and keeps them on track for a promotion to the Championship.
After a bright start by the Cumbrians, Walsall took an undeserved lead through lively winger Lee Holmes. Tommy Mooney's flicked header should have been cleared by Paul Arnison but, as the full-back dithered on the ball, Holmes nipped in to fire a shot under Keiren Westwood's dive.
Scott Dobie, who was making a return to Brunton Park after seven years, went close from Simon Hackney's low cross, but Carlisle finally equalised when Marc Bridge-Wilkinson picked up the ball on the edge of his own box before embarking on a lengthy 70-yard run. His shot on the edge of Walsall's box was handled by ex-Carlisle defender Paul Boertien and the midfielder stepped up to send Ince the wrong way from the spot.
The visitors moved up a gear after the break and Edrissa Sonko should have done better from 12 yards after Mooney's far post header was palmed out by Westwood. And on-loan winger Kevin Betsy headed poorly wide when well placed ten yards out from Holmes' pinpoint cross.
Walsall should have taken the lead when Betsy squared a cross to substitute Troy Deeney but his firm shot was cleared off the line by Peter Murphy after 67 minutes. Just eight minutes later, Ince's long throw out to Holmes was intercepted by Arnison allowing Bridge-Wilkinson to cross for Graham to nod in his tenth of the season. And with Walsall throwing everything at the Carlisle defence, Deeney almost levelled in injury time but his clever turn and shot flew narrowly wide.
